Col. Harry G. Summers, Jr. passed away on November 14, 1999, at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington. He was 67 and had been battling diabetes, heart disease and the effects of a stroke. Besides being the editor of Vietnam magazine, Col. Summers, was a military affairs columnist for the Los Angeles Times Syndicate and the author of numerous books (On Strategy: The Vietnam War in Context, Vietnam War Almanac, Korean War Almanac, Persian Gulf War Almanac, Historical Atlas of the Vietnam War). Col. Summers joined the Army at 15, served five campaigns during the Korean War, and was wounded twice in Vietnam. Among other things, Col. Summers taught at the Army War College, lectured widely on warfare throughout the military education system, was a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the International Institute for Strategic Studies, and was a military analyst for NBC News during the Gulf War. Col. Summers wrote many articles and reviews for such publications as U.S. News & World Report, Defense and Diplomacy, American Heritage, Atlantic Monthly, Harper's and New Republic and won many writing awards. He is survived by his wife, Eloise, and two sons. |
